DETROIT, Mich. – Longwood University suffered its first National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) contest loss 21-17 at the University of Detroit Mercy Sunday afternoon in Detroit, Michigan. Sophomore
Lauren Prasnicki|Lexington (Rockbridge County) led the Lancers (1-8, 1-1 NLC) with four goals and two assists, while senior captain
Jessica Rudloff|West Chester, Pa. (West Chester) also added four goals and had one assist. Longwood will welcome Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m., at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.
There were six lead changes in the first half, none of which exceeded two goals, and the Lancers were trailing by only two at halftime 13-11. Longwood held a 10-8 advantage with 6:45 left in the first after Prasnicki scored the third of her four goals, but the Titans went on a 4-0 run in the next three minutes, which was a lead it would hold for the remaining minutes of the half and through the second period. Junior transfer
Mollie Zimmerman|Fairpoint, N.Y. (Monroe CC|Catawba College) played the first half in net, making three saves, collecting three ground balls and causing one turnover while taking the loss.
Despite opening the second half with a goal from redshirt-freshman
Alexa Anderson|Richmond (St. Catherines) to cut the lead to one at 28:57, Detroit would net five-straight goals in as many minutes. The run was too much to overcome for the Lancers as their four-goal push in the final two minutes -- three of which came with less than a minute to play, and the final goal with just 16 ticks on the clock -- was too little too late and resulted in the final 21-17 score. Freshman
Christian Acker|Moorestown, N.J. (Moorestown) played the duration of the second half in net with eight saves and two ground balls.
Detroit outshot Longwood 42-25 but the Lancers collected 22 draw controls to the Titans 18, and senior captain
Hannah Riggs|Eden Prairie, Minn. (Eden Prairie) collected a game-high five ground balls.
