Longwood Falls To Mount St. Mary's 12-11

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team was handed its first loss at the hands of visiting Northeast Conference (NEC) member Mount St. Mary's 12-11 Tuesday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Senior Cara O'Brien|Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) led a late Lancer (2-1) charge as she recorded four of her game-high five goals in the second half. Nicole Price tallied four goals for the Mountaineers (1-4) in their first victory of the season. Longwood returns to the field Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m., facing Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y.

The first six goals of the game were swapped back and forth between Mount and Longwood until the 13:16 mark when Mount converted four unanswered goals. Senior Duan Wright|Church Hill, Md. (Queen Anne's) then put the Lancers on the board one more time before the half as she scored unassisted with 4:06 remaining. Wright grabbed a game-high four ground balls as well.

Longwood won the second half scoring seven goals to Mount's five, beginning with senior Kesley Dean|Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) who opened with a free position goal at 26:31. She also nabbed three ground balls and added two assists late in the game. O'Brien's fourth and fifth goals came 33 seconds apart at 6:45 and 6:12, and although senior Amanda Bereznay|Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keough) tallied her first goal of the season at 1:50, the Lancers didn't have enough time left to tie the game and force overtime.

Also finishing for LU was sophomore Jamie Brentlinger|Gambrills, Md. (Arundel), freshman Mary Barondess|Centreville (Westfield) and junior Jessica Rudloff|West Chester, Pa. (West Chester East) with one goal each. Barondess led both sides with seven draw controls, adding to Longwood's 16 compared to Mount's nine. The Lancers also took more shots (27) than Mount (22), 21 of which were on goal.

Senior Juli Liebig|Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) played another full game, making six saves and collecting one ground ball. Brigid McTavish was solid for Mount St. Mary's, tallying 10 saves with two ground balls and one caused turnover.
