Longwood Falls 8-7 To Canisius In First Road Game

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team dropped its second game of the season, and its first on the road, at Canisius 8-7 Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, New York. Freshman Mary Barondess|Centreville (Westfield) led the Lancers (2-2) with three goals, all of which were scored in the first half, while junior Hannah Riggs|Eden Prairie, Minn. (Eden Prairie) picked up a game-high eight ground balls against the Griffins (3-3). LU remains in Buffalo, New York to face St. Bonaventure in a neutral-site match Monday, March 14 at 2 p.m.

Longwood led 4-3 at the intermission after Barondess and sophomore Jamie Brentlinger|Gambrills, Md. (Arundel) converted their chances, but Canisius came out firing in the second half, scoring four goals in a row. Carly Quinn scored two of those four for the Griffins, putting them ahead 7-4. The Lancers then mounted a run of their own to notch the game at seven apiece, led by senior Kesley Dean|Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) who scored at the 20:49 and 14:52 marks, sandwiching a goal from junior Sam Stifler|Jarrettsville, Md. (North Harford) at 18:48. Canisius then took back the lead at 11:26 off Maria Kotas's second tally of the game, which proved to be the game-winner.

Even though Longwood beat Canisius in shooting 27-19, in the remaining minutes, the Lancers were only able to muster four shots, giving up eight turnovers with six fouls as their comeback attempt fell short.

In goal for LU again was senior Juli Liebig|Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's), making six saves along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, as Allison Daley earned the win in goal for Canisius, making nine saves.

The Lancers also won the battle in ground balls 31-25 and were out-fouled by the Griffins 31-18.
