FARMVILLE, Va.-- The scheduled Longwood University home baseball game against visiting Campbell University at Bolding Stadium in Farmville for this evening, Tuesday (May 18), at 6 p.m.
has been canceled due to the recent rain and unplayable wet field conditions. It was to have been the home finale for the Lancers (26-18) against the Fighting Camels of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Longwood will now complete its 2010 campaign later this week on the road in Jersey City, New Jersey, playing back-to-back doubleheaders at Saint Peter's University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Thursday and Friday, May 20-21, with action both days starting at 1 p.m..
Longwood has won four-straight games and nine of the last 11 games overall while attaining its 22nd overall 25-win season in the program's 33 years. The Lancers continue to be led at the plate this season by senior third baseman and team captain
Phil Cerreto. He has enjoyed an outstanding final campaign while hitting .427 with 10 home runs, 22 doubles, 57 RBI, a .743 slugging percentage, and a .493 on-base percentage – all team-bests this spring. Expected to join Cerreto in the lineup are classmates and fellow captains
Casey Havers (1B | .401, 2 HR, 14 2B, 44 RBI) and
David Smiy Jr. (LF | .243, 10 2B, 29 RBI), along with classmates
Scott Kimble (SS | .385, 3 HR, 11 2B, 24 RBI) and
Robbie Bailey (CF | .335, 5 HR, 8 2B, 20 RBI). Also expected in the lineup are junior
Brant Jones (2B | .393, 7 HR, 10 2B, 36 RBI), sophomores
Robby Newman (C | .242, 7 HR, 7 2B, 32 RBI) and
Dustin Sollars (RF | .216, 1 HR, 8 2B, 20 RBI), along with freshman
Justin Lacy (DH | .276, 5 HR, 11 2B, 21 RBI).
Havers has a current 23-game hitting streak (42-100, .420), while Jones has a current 19-game hitting streak (41-83, .494). Havers' streak is the team's longest this year and ties for the second-best in the history of the program while Jones' streak is fourth-best.
Longwood is hitting .322 as a team this season with 40 home runs, 108 doubles, and 298 RBI while averaging 7.41 runs per game. Longwood's team pitching ERA is 5.65 through 371.0 innings with 247 strikeouts (5.99).
