FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University posted a final round of 303 Tuesday in women's golf for a tournament-record 54-hole score of 302-298-303--903 to win its own Tina Barrett Invitational played at The Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville. The Lancers won the eight-team event for the second-straight year while finishing five shots ahead of second-place James Madison University (908) at the 6,076-yard, par 72 layout. Nicole Sakamoto of JMU took individual medalist honors with her tournament-record 73-75-70--218. Longwood completed its 2009-10 campaign while hosting the Tina Barrett Invitational at The Manor Resort for the fourth consecutive year.
Longwood was led by juniors
Kameron Carter/Bassett (Bassett) (76-76-72) and
Brooke Mallory/Brockville, Ontario (St. Mary Catholic) (77-72-75) as the third-year tandem tied for second place at 224, though the tie-breaker via scorecards had Carter as runner-up and Mallory taking third among the field of 44 golfers. They were followed by freshmen
Ha Lee/Hagerstown, Md. (Smithsburg) (77-74-75--226, 5th) and
Ariel Witmer/North Lima, Ohio (South Range) (72-76-81--229, t-7th), along with senior
Kelly McAnally/Virginia Beach (Landstown) (90-88-81--259, t-35th). Mallory, Lee, and McAnally each posted new collegiate-bests for 54-holes. Also playing for the Lancers were sophomore
Alexa Boucher/Orange (Orange) (76-76-76--228, 6th) and local senior
Laura Barrett/Blackstone (Nottoway) (85-82-85--252, 31st).
Carter led the tournament field in par 5 scoring (4.50, -6), was tied for fourth in pars (34), fifth in birdies (8), and tied for 10th in par 4 scoring (4.40, +12). Boucher and Mallory tied for the field lead in birdies (10), while Lee led the field in pars (37). Boucher also tied for third in par 3 scoring (3.00, E). Witmer tied for third in par 4 scoring (4.27, +8), and tied for seventh in par 5 scoring (5.17, +2), birdies (6), and pars (33). Lee tied for fourth in par 5 scoring (4.92, -1), tied for eighth in par 3 scoring (3.08, +1), was ninth in par 4 scoring (4.33, +10), and tied for 10th in birdies (5). Mallory tied for third in par 5 scoring (4.83, -2), tied for fifth in par 4 scoring (4.30, +9), and tied for eighth in par 3 scoring (3.08, +1). As a team, Longwood led the field in both par 5 scoring (5.17, +10) and pars (155), was second in both par 4 scoring (4.38, +57) and birdies (30), and was third in par 3 scoring (3.25, +15).
In addition to Longwood (903) and JMU (908), Methodist University (951) finished a distant third. New tournament records were established for team 18 (298), 36 (600), and 54 (903) by Longwood; as well as for individual 18 (70, Sakamoto), 36 (146, Mary Chamberlain-JMU), and 54 (218, Sakamoto).
