Longwood Falls To Louisville 17-10

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell to the University of Louisville of the Big East Conference 17-10 on  Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Senior Carlie Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) led Longwood with two goals and one assist. The Lancers (4-6) return to action on Saturday, April 10, when they face National Lacrosse Conference foe Presbyterian College at 2 p.m. in Clinton, S.C..

Louisville (7-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute before Nethken scored to put Longwood on the board and trailing 2-1 with 27:38 remaining in the first half. Louisville's Liz Lovejoy scored three of the next four goals, with junior Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) scoring one goal to break up the run. Nethken scored again to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 17:31 remaining in the half. Sophomore Sam Stifler/Jarrettsville, Md. (North Harford) and junior Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside) scored back-to-back goals to pull within one at 7-6 with 10:09 remaining. Neither team would score for over 10 minutes before Louisville added a goal with 0:02 left in the half to give the Cardinals the 8-6 halftime lead.

Louisville scored the first two goals of the second half to push the lead to 10-6. Junior Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) and O'Brien scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 10-8 with 22:25 remaining in the game. Louisville went on a 7-2 run over the final 21:57 to win 17-10.

Longwood had four players score two goals, with Nethken, O'Brien, Dean and junior Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) scoring a pair. Junior goalkeeper Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) received the loss after giving up 16 goals in 55:39. She recorded 12 saves and grabbed a team-high four ground balls. Dean added three ground balls while Karli Brentlinger had three draw controls.

Louisville was led by Bergan Foley with six goals and Lovejoy with five. Danielle Pawliw earned the win in the cage, giving up 10 goals with nine saves in 60 minutes.

The Cardinals outshot Longwood 37-25 and had an 18-10 advantage in draw controls. Longwood edged Louisville 14-13 in ground balls.
