Longwood Drops Heartbreaker To Old Dominion 16-15

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell to Old Dominion University of the Colonial Athletic Association 16-15 on Wednesday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. ODU (2-2) rallied from an 11-7 halftime deficit to tie the game with 12:04 remaining. The Monarchs scored the winning goal with 0:23 remaining on a free position shot by Lisa Bernardini. Longwood (3-5) was led by junior Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) with five goals. The Lancers return to action on Thursday, April 1, when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on Howard University at 4 p.m..

Longwood jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a pair of O'Brien goals and a score by junior Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) put Longwood ahead 3-0 just 5:40 in to the game. After a goal by ODU, the Lancers scored three more goals over the next seven minutes to pull ahead 6-1 with 18:16 remaining in the first half. The teams traded goals before freshman Jamie Brentlinger/Odenton, Md. (Arundel) and senior Carlie Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) scored back-to-back goals to put Longwood ahead 9-3 with 3:39 remaining. The Monarchs outscored Longwood 4-2 over the final 3:23 as Longwood carried an 11-7 lead in to halftime. Junior Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) scored with one second remaining in the first half.

Karli Brentlinger opened the second half with a goal just 16 seconds in to the period to put Longwood ahead 12-7 but the Monarchs would rally, scoring the next four goals to pull within one at 12-11 with 17:10 remaining in the game. O'Brien scored with 14:58 left to put Longwood ahead 13-11 but ODU would score four more goals to pull ahead 15-13 with 6:43 remaining. O'Brien and Karli Brentlinger scored back-to-back goals to tie the game with 2:14 left. The Lancers controlled the draw and set up a shot by Karli Brentlinger, but ODU goalkeeper Sarah Geary came up with the save. Bernardini scored the game-winning goal on a free position shot with 23 seconds remaining. The Monarchs controlled the draw but turned the ball over. Junior Duan Wright/Church Hill, Md. (South River) picked up the ground ball and Longwood worked the ball up to Karli Brentlinger who fired a shot just wide of the net as time expired.

Longwood was led by O'Brien with five goals on eight shots, including going 2-2 on free position attempts. Karli Brentlinger added four goals on nine shots with four draw controls. Dean added two goals while junior Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keough) scored one goal with one assist. Junior Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) recorded nine saves in goal for the Lancers. Longwood led ODU in several statistical categories, including a 21-19 edge in ground balls and a 21-11 advantage in draw controls.

Old Dominion was led by Bernardini with five goals and three assists for eight points. Nichole McMahon and Ashley Kellogg each added four goals with one assist. Sarah Wright scored two goals with one assist and five draw controls. Geary had 13 saves in goal for the Monarchs.
