Longwood Drops 17-10 Decision At Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-10 decision to the United States Naval Academy on Sunday afternoon in Annapolis, Maryland. Senior Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine's) scored two goals with one assist to lead the Lancers (0-2). Navy (4-0) was paced by Danielle Vivonetto with a game-high six goals. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, March 3, when they host fellow National Lacrosse Conference member Liberty University at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.

The Lancers fell behind early as Navy jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 14:21 remaining in the first half. Longwood got on the board two minutes later when Farmer scored on a free position shot. After another Navy score, junior Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside) scored a pair of goals in less than one minute to pull the Lancers within two at 5-3 with 9:12 remaining in the half. Junior Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) scored another goal for the Lancers but Navy added three in the final minutes of the first half to take an 8-4 lead in to the break.

Longwood closed the gap to start the second half as junior Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keough) and Farmer each scored a goal to pull within two at 8-6 with 27:09 remaining in the game. Navy went on a 5-0 run in less than four minutes to push the advantage to 13-6 with 21:51 remaining. Freshman Jamie Brentlinger/Odenton, Md. (Arundel) broke the run with a goal but Navy countered with another two goals to put the Midshipmen ahead 15-7 with 17:28 remaining. Junior Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) scored a pair of goals in a 30 second period and Jamie Brentlinger added another with 7:01 left in the game to make the score 15-10. Vivonetto scored two more goals for Navy to make the final score 17-10.

Farmer led the Lancers with two goals and one assist for three points. Karli Brentlinger, Jamie Brentlinger and Illian each scored two goals while Bereznay and Dean scored one each. Karli Brentlinger had seven draw controls and three draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) started in goal for the Lancers and gave up 13 goals in 40:14 with five saves and four ground balls.

The Midshipmen were led by Vivonetto with six goals on eight shots. Erin Rawlick and Kathy Young each added three goals. Elaina Ponchione played all 60 minutes in goal and allowed 10 goals with eight saves.

Navy outshot Longwood 29-25 and edged the Lancers in draw controls (15-14) and saves (8-7).
