RICHMOND, Va. - The Longwood University men's tennis team defeated George Mason University 4-1 on Sunday evening at the VCU 4-1 Invitational in Richmond. The Lancers fell to host Virginia Commonwealth University 5-0 earlier in the day. This event, the first of the spring season for Longwood, featured four singles matches and one doubles match. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, February 6, when they travel to Williamsburg, Virginia, to take on the College of William and Mary at 5 p.m..

Against George Mason, Longwood picked up wins by sophomore Nobu Tanaka/Potomac, Md. (St. John's College HS) at #1 (6-4, 6-1), freshman Marc Ferrigno/Hvidovre, Denmark (Brondby Gymnasium) at #2 (6-2, 6-1) and senior Billy Heird/York, Pa. (Dallastown) at #3 (6-2, 6-2). Freshmen Adham Halabi/Beamsville, Canada (Niagara Academy) and Bruno Orlandini/Araraquara, Brazil (E.E.B.A. Araraquara) won the doubles point (6-3, 7-5). Senior Andres Lazarte/Vienna (San Miguel) fell at #4 (6-4, 5-7, 7-10).

The Lancers were swept by VCU 5-0. Tanaka fell at #1 (6-4, 6-0), Ferrigno lost at #2 (6-7(9), 6-2, 10-2), Orlandini fell at #3 (6-1, 6-1) and Heird lost at #4 (6-3, 6-1). Junior Milo Barajas-Alexander/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) and Halabi dropped the doubles point (6-1, 6-4).
