PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Longwood University's field hockey team defeated Siena College 3-2 on a last-second goal in overtime on Saturday afternoon in a neutral site match in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sophomore
Andrea Bastiaanse/Granby, Conn. (Granby Memorial) scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining in the first overtime period. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, September 19, against Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference in Durham, North Carolina at 1 p.m..
Longwood struck first when
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Wener-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) took a pass from
Jessica Mantel/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) and scored 4:57 into the opening period. Siena would answer less than three minutes later with a Caroline Hunnewell goal to tie the game at 1-1. Brittany Moran would score for the Saints in the 18th minute to take a 2-1 lead, an advantage they would hold for the rest of the first half.
The Lancers evened the match in the 52nd minute when
Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) scored an unassisted goal to tie the score at 2-2. Neither team would score in the rest of regulation.
The teams would play 14:59 of scoreless overtime before Bastiaanse would take a feed from
Kelsey Turner/Virginia Beach (Tallwood) to give Longwood the sudden-victory win.
“Today's game was similar to yesterday's game,” said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. “We dominated the stats and this time we were able to pull out the win. It was a scrappy win for this team.”
Freshman goalkeeper
Amy Lewis/Lewisville, N.C. (Forsyth Country Day) had five saves for Longwood while Renee Clavette had 17 saves for Siena. Knop had five shots, all on goal, and Mantel and
Christina Verhulst/Yorktown (Grafton) each had three shots on goal.
Longwood outshot Siena 28-8, including 11-1 in the second half. Twenty of the Lancers' shots were on goal while all eight of the Saints' were on goal. Longwood held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.
