PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Longwood University field hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at La Salle University on Friday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sophomore
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Wener-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) scored two goals in the loss. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, September 12, when they face Siena College at 2 p.m. in Philadelphia in a neutral site match.
The Explorers would score first on a Beth Carey goal in the 27th minute. La Salle would pull ahead 2-0 on a Janel Paukovits goal with less than one minute remaining in the opening period.
The Lancers answered in the second half, pulling within one goal after senior
Melissa Strickland/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) gathered a loose ball in front of the net and put it home 5:25 into the period. Knop scored with 6:28 remaining in the game on a shot off a corner by junior
Lauren van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal). Knop scored her second goal off a pass from
Samantha Wesser/Williamsburg (Jamestown) three minutes later to give Longwood the 3-2 lead with 3:34 remaining. La Salle's Rebecca Chylack tied the game at 3-3 with a goal with 58 seconds remaining in the match.
The teams entered overtime and Longwood had the first scoring opportunity, but the shot by freshman
Christina Verhulst/Yorktown (Grafton) was blocked. La Salle's Haley Froshour would score the game-winner 7:49 into overtime.
“We did a good job of controlling the game most of the time,” said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. “We gave up three or four breakaways and they converted. We didn't finish well in front of the cage which is something we will look to improve on tomorrow against Siena.”
Longwood outshot La Salle 14-6, including 7-1 in the second half. The Lancers also held a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners.
