FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell to Virginia Tech 13-10 on Tuesday afternoon in Blacksburg. The Lancers fell to 8-5 while the Hokies improved to 7-7. Junior
Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine's) led the Lancers with three goals, two of them during a 6-0 Longwood run in the second half. The Lancers return to action on Friday, April 17, traveling to Villanova, Pennsylvania, to face Villanova University at 6 p.m.
The Lancers fell behind quickly with Virginia Tech opening the game on a 10-1 run in the first 19:52. Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) scored the only Longwood goal to break up the rally. The Lancers got one goal from
Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) and another from
Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) to trim the lead to 10-3 with 1:08 remaining in the first half. The Hokies would answer with a goal of their own with 0:29 remaining in the half to give them an 11-3 halftime lead.
Both teams struggled to score to start the second half until Virginia Tech scored with 21:50 remaining in the game. The Lancers went on a run of their own, scoring six goals over the next 15:09 to to draw within three at 12-9 with 6:07 remaining in the game. Farmer scored two goals during the run while Warehime,
Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside),
Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's), and
Duan Wright/Church Hill, Md. (Queen Anne's) each added one goal. Virginia Tech's Rachel Culp would score her fifth goal of the game with 4:23 remaining to put the Hokies ahead 13-9. Farmer would add one more goal with 3:29 left but the Lancers could get no closer, falling 13-10.
Farmer scored her three goals on six shots, making both of her free position attempts, and picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Warehime scored twice on six shots while Dean added one goal and one assist.
Carlie Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) picked up six ground balls and three draw controls while causing three turnovers from her defensive position.
Virginia Tech was led by Culp's five goals. Allie Emala added three goals and two assists and Jessica Nonn and Liz Carpenter each scored twice. Kari Morrison played all 60 minutes in goal, stopping 18 Longwood shots.
