FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University pulled away early and never let up, topping Mount St. Mary's 17-12 in women's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va. Sophomore
Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) led the Lancers with five goals. Longwood returns to action on Tuesday, March 10 when it travels to Louisville.
Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring with a Kathleen Rossetti goal 2:24 into the game.
Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) countered less than a minute later to tie the score at one. After a Mount St. Mary's goal the Lancers scored the next four goals in less than five minutes.
Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) scored the first goal, followed by Owen,
Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) and
Page Farmer/Richmond, Va. (St. Catherine's). Mount St. Mary's scored another goal to make it 5-3 but the Lancers scored three more to extend the lead to 8-3 with 9:58 remaining in the first half. Rossetti and Katelyn Catanese each scored in the last five minutes of the first half, making the halftime score 8-5 in favor of the Lancers.
Brentlinger started the scoring in the second half, finding the net only 21 seconds into the period. Mount St. Mary's scored two goals to make the score 9-7 but that is as close as they would get for the rest of the game. Brentlinger scored two goals on free position shots to extend the lead to 11-7. Longwood scored four goals over a four-minute span, one each by
Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Seton Keough), Sellmayer,
Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) and Farmer, making the score 16-9. Mount St. Mary's would score three of the final four goals of the game but it would not be enough.
Brentlinger's five goals mark the third straight game the sophomore has scored at least five goals. Owen finished with three goals, while Sellmayer and Farmer had two each. Dean assisted on three goals and scored one of her own to finish with four points. Warehime,
Duan Wright/Church Hill, Md. (Queen Anne's), Bereznay and Cara O'Brien/Arlington, Va. (Bishop O'Connell) each added one goal.
Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville, Va. (Charlottesville) posted six saves in 33 minutes in goal for the Lancers.
Rossetti scored a game-high six goals to lead Mount St. Mary's. Catanese added three more while Breana Waraksa had two assists.
