FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's lacrosse team defeated in-state foe Richmond 13-11 on Tuesday night in Farmville. Longwood improves to 5-3 while Richmond falls to 0-7. Longwood sophomore
Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) led all scorers with five goals while classmate Cara O'Brien/Arlington, Va. (Bishop O'Connell) added four goals for the Lancers. Longwood returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Davidson at 1 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
Richmond took the early lead after scoring the first three goals but the Lancers answered back, scoring three goals of their own. Brentlinger struck first with 17:11 remaining, followed by an O'Brien goal off a
Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) pass. Brentlinger tied the game with an unassisted goal with 13:09 remaining in the first half. Richmond answered quickly, scoring two goals to take a 5-3 lead with 11:27 remaining. Another three goal burst by Longwood, two by Brentlinger and one by O'Brien, made the score 6-5 Longwood with 3:26 remaining. The Spiders would score one more goal to tie the game 6-6 at half.
Longwood struck first in the second half with sophomore
Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside) scoring less than 30 seconds into the period. Sellmayer added another unassisted goal to put Longwood ahead 8-6. Richmond scored twice in the next four minutes to tie the game 8-8 with 23:26 remaining. Sophomore
Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) scored to put Longwood ahead 9-8 but Richmond answered with two more goals to take the 10-9 lead with 14:58 remaining. Brentlinger and O'Brien scored one minute apart, both on free position shots, to claim an 11-10 lead. Richmond tied the game at 11-11 with 10:31 remaining but could not pull ahead. Senior
Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) took a pass from Dean and scored to put the Lancers up for good with 7:51 remaining. O'Brien scored one more goal to give the Lancers the 13-11 win.
Sophomore
Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) played all 60 minutes in goal, stopping 11 shots, eight of them in the second half. Dean finished with one goal and two assists, while Sellmayer and Warehime each added one goal and one assist. Junior
Page Farmer/Richmond, Va. (St. Catherine's) assisted on two goals and Illian had one goal.
Richmond was paced by Allison Furstenburg with four goals and one assist. Mandy Friend added three goals and one assist.
