BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team (1-4) dropped a heart-breaker to Vermont (1-2) on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Catamounts 2-1 at the Athletics Complex. Freshman
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Wener-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) scored the lone Lancer goal in the third minute of action. The Lancer return to the field on Friday, September 12 as they play host to conference opponent Davidson. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Knop gave the Lancers the early 1-0 lead after jumping on top of a ball that was loose in the box after a penalty corner. Longwood would hold most of the possession throughout the first half of the game, despite being outshot by Vermont 14-11.
The Catamount evened things up in the 26th minute after earning a penalty corner. Lauren Burke scored the goal for Vermont, sending the two teams into the half tied at one a piece.
The Lancers came out in the second half still carrying the majority of the momentum. Things changed in the 41st minute when Vermont snuck a second goal in to take a 2-1 lead. Megan Maynard went on to score what would be the game winning goal after deflecting a pass into the box into the back of the net.
“It's disappointing,” said head coach
Iain Byers. “We were so solid and looked great. Unfortunately we were not able to take advantage of our opportunities and that's what this game is all about. I am so proud of the way our girls have been playing. Right now all we can do is look forward to our game against Davidson and know that we just keep getting better and better.”
The Longwood defense once again had a strong showing, stifling many of Vermont's attacks. Senior keeper
Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) picked up her fourth complete game, making six saves.
