WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Longwood's fourth-quarter rally fell short as William & Mary defeated the Lancers, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Busch Field. Juniors

Caitlin Carraway scored for Longwood.
"Today was a tough battle," head coach Miranda Rigg said. "W&M is a good team who plays together and fast. Unfortunately, we had some lapses defensively as a unit. I love the fight especially in the fourth quarter, it generated a lot of opportunities for us. Our goal is to keep working and striving towards a more consistent game."
How It Happened
- The Tribe (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal from freshman Hayden Haynes. After a back-and-forth opening quarter, William & Mary entered halftime with a 2-0 lead after a Josie Mae Grundel goal in the second quarter.
- Junior goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk kept the Tribe at bay throughout the third quarter, allowing just one goal midway through the period.
- The Lancers (0-2) rallied in the fourth. Graduate student Meghan Hyatt sent a ball into the circle off a penalty corner, finding Carraway's stick in the middle. She chipped it in to cut the deficit to 3-1 less than two minutes into the final period.
- An unlucky penalty corner and a fast break pushed the Tribe's lead to 5-1 in the 54th minute. Senior Channy Johnson then found a breakaway opportunity and slipped the ball into the shooting circle, where Kadjeski cut the lead to 5-2 with just under five minutes remaining.
- Mooldjik made two saves in goal for Longwood.
