FARMVILLE, Va. – Jackson Garland delivered in a big moment for Longwood baseball over the weekend, and the righthander was named the Big South Co-Relief Pitcher of the Week, along with Max Bianchini of USC Upstate, the conference office announced today.
Â
Garland was lights out against Winthrop in a must-win game for the Lancers. The freshman dominated for 4.1 innings of relief, limiting Winthrop to one base runner in that span. He faced the 14 batters in his 4.1 innings of work, and he faced the minimum in three of his four full innings.
Â
In addition, Garland struck out four batters and earned the win, helping Longwood clinch a playoff spot for the first time since the 2018 season. He entered with runners on first and second and proceeded to strike out a batter to start his run. He faced 14 batters over his 4.1 innings, one more than the minimum.
Â
He is the fourth Lancer to earn Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week honors, joining
Jackson Nash,
Wyatt Bunch and
JR Fordham. It is also the second time Garland has earned a weekly honor after being named the Big South Freshman of the Week on March 2.
Â
Longwood faces off against No. 3 USC Upstate in the first round of the Big South Tournament on Wednesday, May 20 at 3 p.m. The game is slated to air on ESPN+.
