HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood took the lead in the top of the first behind a walk from Tre Keels before he stole second and third. He finished the night with four stolen bases. Jae'dan Carter knocked him home with a single to left-center.

But Winthrop got going in the bottom of the first. Colin Crowley gave the home side the lead for good with a two-out grand slam for a 5-1 lead, and the Eagles extended it in the second with eight more runs on nine hits.

While Longwood's offense got going in the third to cut the lead to eight on a Jon Howard two-run double, the Winthrop offense again had the response to keep the game out of reach with three in the home half of the frame.

Luke Earnhardt (5-3) earned the win on the mound for Winthrop. He struck out eight in 5.2 innings while limiting Longwood to five runs, one earned, on five hits and four walks.

Drew Siegner (2-1) took the loss for Longwood after giving up seven runs on six hits and a walk while working into the second inning.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Gotta give a lot of credit to Winthrop and their approach tonight," said Longwood Head Coach Ray Noe. "They came out swinging and didn't let up. We failed to execute pitches all night, and they made us pay. On the mound, their starter did a great job of pounding the zone and putting us away with two strikes."

"We showed some glimpses of life offensively there in the third, but after that, not a whole lot was going there for us," Noe said. "New day tomorrow, and a chance to close out the series."

UP NEXT:

Longwood play in the rubber match of the series on Saturday night at 6 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+.
