Women's Golf Perseveres, Leads El Campeon Collegiate After Day One

Four Lancers Tied for Fifth Amid Challenging Conditions at Mission Inn Resort

THE HILLS, Fla. – Longwood women's golf persevered amid gusting winds and low temperatures, and the team leads the El Campeon Collegiate following one-and-a-half rounds of golf, roughly, after the second round was suspended due to darkness.

Four Lancers are tied for fifth on a day when scoring below 80 was an excellent effort due to the conditions at the Par 72 course at the Mission Inn Resort.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Abigail Sheldon, Madison Lehr, Avery Nordman and Caroline Tragesser all are listed at 12-over in the middle of their second rounds.

Nordman was tied for third after an opening-round 77, and she is seven over in her second round. She has three birdies so far.

Abigail Sheldon was right behind her with a 78 on the opening round, and she is six over in the middle of her second round.

Madison Lehr shot a 79 for her opening round and sits five over through her second round, and Caroline Tragesser shot an 80 in round one while sinking a pair of birdies during her second round.

Chiara Wippert also is in the top 20, tied for 17th. She moved up with 10 pars in 13 holes in her second round after shooting an 85 in round one.

The Lancers posted a 314 in the first round as a team, putting them six shots behind North Dakota State after round one. Longwood's second round had them ahead of the Bison before the round was suspended for the night.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"This is a quirky, challenging golf course in good conditions," said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. "With the low temperatures plus gusting wind, the scores show how much more difficult it became. I told the team this morning that the average round would be mid-80s today, so that would help keep their composure. They did a great job grinding all day and fighting through the adversity of bad breaks. We are in a good position heading into tomorrow, so let's see how low we can go!"
