Lancers Set New Benchmarks in Multiple Events

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lancers opened the new year with several strong performances Friday at the Liberty Open, led by Nyomi Rhodes and Andrew Hathaway.

Rhodes delivered a top-tier performance in the women's 400m, while Hathaway cemented his standings in the Big South in the men's mile.

NOTABLES:

Hathaway led a deep group of Lancer distance runners in the men's mile, finishing sixth overall with a time of 4:18.92. This marked a personal best for Hathaway and a school record, shaving nearly seven seconds off the previous program record. With this finish, Hathaway now ranks 5th in the Big South in this event.

Two other Lancers finished in the top 25, as Clinton Clancy placed 21st with a time of 4:25.82 and AJ Koval came in 23rd with a time of 4:28.78.

Kris Mickens set a new school record in the long jump with a mark of 6.53 meters to finish 16th, followed by Matthew Fitzner who finished 36th with a mark of 5.85 meters.

The combination of Joshua Martin, Andrew Rutherford, and Sean Jaqua helped rewrite the men's 800 record book, with all three finishing in under two minutes. Martin finished 11th overall with a time of 1:57.50, Jaqua had a time of 1:58.34 and finished 16th overall, and Rutherford finished with a time of 1:58.90 and 18th overall.

On the women's side, Rhodes posted one of the top performances of the day for Longwood, breaking the 60-second mark in the women's 400 with a time of 59.87 and finishing 31st overall.

Sophie Farley, yet again, broke another school record after her strong showing in the women's 800 invitational, finishing sixth with a time of 2:13.29 against strong competition.

Additionally, the mile on both the men's and women's side saw significant movement within the program's top ten list, with several new names entering the rankings.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Lots of steps in the right direction today and a few breakthroughs," said Head Coach Brooke Craig. "Nyomi broke 60 for the first time in the 400, and Hathaway broke 4:20. Since the meet's format changed from a 2-day to a 1-day meet, we adjusted our expectations to setting a benchmark after winter break. The team finished well today and is ready to hit another big training block before our next meet at Darius Dixon."
