FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Longwood men's tennis team won nine singles and four doubles matches on the first day of the UMW Invitational Saturday.
Against players from host Mary Washington, Johns Hopkins and Washington College, the Lancers dropped just one of the 10 singles matches played on the day with all but two of those victories coming in straight sets.
Timéo Puech opened singles action with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Trevor Rein of Mary Washington. Ninad Raut won by retirement over UMW's Matt Scott, who picked up an injury at 4-3 in the first set. Rufus Plane topped Jack Riordan, 6-3, 7-5, and Daniel Lopez beat Evan Fisher, 6-2, 6-3.
Alejandro Uribe did not drop a game against Cooper Lehman on the way to his win, while Marko Mrdak defeated Will Fromherz, 7-5. 6-4. Petter Lindquist and Gary Huang each outlasted their opponents in three sets.
Longwood earned a pair of doubles wins from Daniel Borisov and Lindquist against Johns Hopkins duo Mukundh Boopathi and Jason Li (6-1) as well as UMW's Riordan and Lehman (6-4).
Uribe and Lopez also defeated Scott and Fromherz, 6-1, while Plane and Raut defeated Ryan Gipner and Ryan Battaglia, 7-6 (5).
The tournament wraps up Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
