EDISTO BEACH, S.C. – Longwood women's golf battled the elements in the second round at the Edisto Island Invitational today, but the team knocked more than 10 strokes off its first round score to stay in the top 10.
Avery Nordman and
Chiara Wippert both sit in the top 25 with one round remaining on the Par 71 course at The Plantation Course at Edisto.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Longwood ended the day ninth out of 16 teams after carding a 303 that was 13 strokes better than yesterday amid rainy, windy weather. The two-round tally of 316-303—619 (+51) has them two shots behind Western Carolina, Campbell and Wofford, who are all tied for sixth. In addition, the Lancers are six shots back of East Carolina in fifth.
Nordman stayed inside the top 12 with a consistent second round. The freshman is tied for 12
th after posting a 74 for a two-round total of 75-74—149 (+7). She had one birdie and 13 pars on the day.
Wippert moved up six spots into a tie for 22
nd after shaving three strokes off of her opening round yesterday. She had a trio of birdies today and has a two-round tally of 78-75—153 (+11).
Both
Madison Lehr and
Caroline Tragesser moved up five spots into a tie for 44
th. Both players trimmed five shots off their first round, and they have matching 82-77—159 (+17) scorelines.
Abigail Sheldon ended the day tied for 47
th with an 81-79—160.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We moved up the leaderboard early, but the rain came and washed us back to ninth again," said Longwood Head Coach
Megan Weaver. "The rain didn't negatively impact our playing, it was more three-putts than anything. We got some revenge on the holes we struggled with yesterday, so it's always good to see that turnaround. Avery and Chiara led the team again today; their consistency has been crucial."
