CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –  Following the opening day of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, Justin LaRue is tied for 43^rd in the 78-player field through 35 holes.
 
Due to expected severe inclement weather on Tuesday or Wednesday, the second round was started during the afternoon. The second round was suspended at 8:15 p.m. due to darkness, and LaRue has one hole remaining.
 
He ended the first round with a one-over 71 on the challenging Par 70, 7,084 yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
 
LaRue, who became the first men's golfer to qualify individually for an NCAA Regional since the early 2000s, competed against a difficult course that featured fast, undulating greens.
 
"I thought Justin played a lot of good golf today," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "Outside of a few tee balls, his ballstriking was very solid. I also thought he rolled it great and hit the hole a bunch of times; he just couldn't get many to drop. Sometimes it goes that way. He could very well make everything he looks at tomorrow."
 
In his first round, he managed to save par multiple times with solid iron play. During the round, he tallied a pair of birdies to go with 14 pars.
 
He made a tough par save after his tee shot got away from him on the 13^th hole in the first round to close strong.
 
Round two was again up and down as he wrestled with the course. The junior managed to card five birdies, but he exited the course at two over par with one final hole to go.
 
During the round, he posted back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes, and he closed his evening with a birdie on 17.
 
For his 35 holes, he has totaled seven birdies and 20 pars. He was at his best on Par 5s, where he shot three under.
 
He will take to the course on Tuesday morning to play the 18^th and final hole of his second round. Then, he is scheduled to play the final 18 holes on Tuesday as well due to the expected thunderstorms in the area on Wednesday.
