Women's Golf Falls in Big South Match Play Thriller 3-2

Landis, Jennings Win Match Play Points, Force Charleston Southern to Last Hole

FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. – After advancing to match play for the first time in team history, it came down to the final hole for Longwood women's golf on Wednesday.

The Lancers had dueled with Charleston Southern throughout the day, but Charleston Southern's Odette Font Garcia fended off a charge from Breanna Hoese on the final few holes to give the Bucs a 3-2 win.

For Longwood, both Emma Landis and Annabelle Jennings won their matchups 4&2, capping off a strong tournament run for the seniors. The Lancers peaked at the right time, playing their best golf of the season as a team in the Big South Tournament.

The duo also led the way in stroke play to guide Longwood into match play for the first time in team history, with Landis tying for fifth while Jennings tied for 11th.
"What a battle!" said Longwood Head Coach Megan Weaver. "Charleston Southern is a talented team, and we took them to the 18th hole on the final match. Annabelle is a beast at match play. Bre took the Big South stroke play medalist to the 18th hole, a huge accomplishment, especially from a freshman! We had a fantastic season. The team has a lot to be proud of!"

With Longwood down one, Jennings responded. She rebounded from an early one-hole deficit and won back-to-back-to-back holes on the front nine for a two-shot lead. The senior then extended it to four holes on the back nine and clinched her point with two holes to play.

Landis, meanwhile, let almost wire-to-wire in her matchup with Madison Freeman. She took the lead on the second hole and never looked back.

Much like her final round of stroke play, Landis finished with a flourish. She clinched her point on the 16th hole with a birdie, giving her a four hole lead with two to play.

However, Font Garcia closed the door on the Lancers in the final round of the morning. She faced off against Breanna Hoese, who was up for the challenge in a nip and tuck round. The two were never separated by more than two holes.

Hoese, a freshman, had closed within one shot going into the final hole, but Font Garcia was able to win it on the 18th and final hole with a par that pushed her lead to two.

It closes the season for Longwood, their first under head coach Megan Weaver. The fourth place finish was the team's best finish in a tournament this season in stroke play.
