Trio Finish Top Seven after First Two Rounds, Have Lancers Third

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Scott Jordan ripped off a huge first round, Justin LaRue carded back-to-back rounds at par or better, and Nick Rakes was solid on Monday. The trio all are in the top seven, and Longwood men's golf is third out of 14 teams after two rounds at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate.

Jordan was awesome out of the gate with his lowest round of the season, and the Lancers are five shots back of Stetson, who leads the field, on Stetson's home course.

NOTABLES:

Longwood is one shot back from second behind Jacksonville State and only five behind Stetson, the leaders. The Lancers have a one shot lead on Troy in fourth, and they are 10 strokes up on Charleston Southern, the only other team in the Big South at the event.

Jordan posted a season-low 68, which was also the best round to start the tournament in the 88 player field. It wound up as the second-best round of the entire day and one of only four rounds below 70 in the entire field.

For Jordan, it was his ninth round below par this year, and he ripped off six birdies in the round. He followed it up with a 73 to finish three under on the day.

Meanwhile, LaRue, as he has been all season, was consistent. Both his rounds were at par or better, marking the 14th and 15th times this season he has been at par or better.

Rakes bounced back from a couple of tough holes in the opening round to still card a 73, and he shaved a stroke off in round two with an even-par 72.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"As the scoring shows, the golf course is playing very difficult this week," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "After shooting ourselves in the foot a couple times to start the morning, I thought most of us were able to do a pretty good job of keeping the ball where we wanted it for the majority of the day."

"Obviously, Scott did a great job in the morning and kind of held us in there in that round," Fillman added. "Tomorrow's going to be fun trying to track down Stetson on their golf course. In order to have a chance to do so, we definitely have some things that we're going to have to do better than today. We're looking forward to the challenge."

UP NEXT:

Longwood will play the third and final round of the tournament on Tuesday morning.
