Mooldijk Named MAC Goalkeeper Of The Year

Freshman Earns All-MAC First Team Honors, Tierney Earns Second Team Nod

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood field hockey found a keeper in goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk. The freshman was named the MAC Goalkeeper of the Year today when the conference office announced All-MAC honors.

In addition, Mooldijk earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team and the All-MAC Freshman Team, and she was joined by Zoe Tierney, who garnered All-MAC Second Team honors.

Mooldijk became the first player to earn MAC Goalkeeper of the Year, and she joins Katie Wyman (Defensive Player of the Year-2019), Luna Lopez (Freshman of the Year-2018), Camila Duarte (Freshman of the Year-2019), and Maroussia Walckiers (Freshman of the Year-2021 Fall) as players to win an individualized award from the MAC.

For the season, Mooldijk posted 118 saves, the most in a single season in more than a decade. She had a .781 save percentage, which led the MAC, to go with a 1.98 goals against average. She picked up four wins as well while playing nearly 1,000 minutes.

Five times during the year, Mooldijk made at least 10 saves, and she was the MAC Defensive Player of the Week once. The Netherlands native helped Longwood win its season finale in a shootout over Georgetown, capping a strong 10-save performance with three stops on four attempts in the shootout. She had a career high 16 saves earlier in the season against then No. 19 Liberty to help force overtime against a top 20 side.

Meanwhile, Tierney, a team captain, was everywhere all at once, seemingly, during the season. The senior tied for ninth in the MAC with six goals, a mark that led the team. She had three game-winning shots as well, which tied for fourth in the league.

In addition, Tierney added an assist and was a perfect 3-3 on penalty strokes on the year. She also played a pivotal role on the other end of the field, and she had a defensive save.

In the season finale against Georgetown, Tierney put home the game-winning attempt in the shootout to lift the Lancers past the Hoyas.
