HOW IT HAPPENED:

With one round in the books, Longwood is within striking distance of the top four with two rounds of golf still left on Thursday and Friday. The top four teams qualify for match play on Saturday to determine the conference champion, and the Lancers are only four shots away from being one of those four teams.

Both Schaffer and Huffman battled for solid scores on a day when only two players in the 50-player field shot better than par.

Schaffer fired one birdie and 11 pars to post her 77, and Huffman had a pair of birdies and 10 pars on the day.

Landis had a strong middle stretch that saw her shoot par or better on six consecutive holes, and she finished with a 78 that left her tied for 17th.

Jennings was tied for 35th after posting 12 pars on the day for an opening round 81, and Choi was tied for 46th with an 85.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We didn't perform our best, but we are still in the mix heading into the second round tomorrow," said Longwood Head Coach Brittany Dabule. "Some of us didn't execute in some big spots, and it cost us. They know better though, and I hope they can reflect on the missed opportunities and put together a solid round tomorrow to move up the leaderboard before the final round on Friday."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Longwood as a team posted the third-best average score on Par 5s at 5.30.

The Lancers had 53 pars, which tied for the most in the field.

Huffman and Jennings were at even par on Par 5s on the course, which was tied for fifth in the field.

Landis led the team with 13 pars, which was tied for fourth most in the field.
