Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
LaRue carded yet another top 10 finish after tying for sixth. He has finished in the top 10 in all four tournaments he has played this fall, and he has also finished under par in three straight tournaments.
Â
Today, he moved up three spots behind a great closing stretch that saw him rip off three birdies and an eagle in the final eight holes. He finished the day three under, and his three-round raw score of 206 tied the third-lowest round in team history. Relative to par, it was tied for the fifth-best round.
Â
He also was averaged par or better on both Par 4s and Par 5s, and he was tied for second in the field with a pair of eagles in the tournament.
Â
Jordan also got in a groove late to climb 17 spots in the standings in the final round. He tied for 30
th with a final-round 69 to finish at even par for the tournament. Over his final 11 holes, he had five birdies and six pars. He led Longwood with 11 birdies over the course of the two days.
Â
David LaFreniere carded a 73 thanks, in part, to an eagle and a pair of birdies in the round, and he moved up two spots.
Â
Zane Moore posted a 76 while
Nick Rakes notched a 77 to round out the team scores.
Â
At VSGA Intercollegiate, Lyons matched his opening round yesterday with a 73 to finish tied for 10
th.
Â
Willie Hoover climbed up multiple spots with an even-par 72 to finish tied for 12
th, and Camreon Hardison posted a top 20 finish after tying for 19
th with a final-round 75.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"In the simplest terms, we did not meet our expectations today," said Longwood Head Coach
Kevin Fillman about his team's final round at the Phoenix Invitational. "I'm not sure why, but it seemed like we all started out the round sleepwalking. That's pretty much the way things went for quite a while, and, as a result, we had probably lost a number of positions by mid-round."
Â
"Fortunately, both Justin and Scott eventually woke up and were able to hold us in there overall," Fillman added. "We talk a lot about competing hard and being tougher than anybody else at all times. Being successful comes down to those two things, especially when things aren't going well like today. We'll learn from it and be better."
Â
UP NEXT:
