FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood field hockey team was fired up and locked in a back and forth match with 14
th ranked Old Dominion on Wednesday night, but lightning and Mother Nature cut everything short. The two sides were tied 1-1 before the match was postponed due to inclement weather.
Â
A makeup date has not been scheduled.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Longwood (1-3) came out aggressive in the opening minutes of the match, and the Lancers fired off a trio of shots in the first quarter.
Floor Schouten deflected home a ball in the seventh minute to stake Longwood to an early lead after
Kolbey Donahue played a ball into the shooting circle that
Isis Vrolijks tapped to Schouten.
Â
ODU (3-1) evened things up off a penalty corner in the 21
st minute. Nicole Fredricks knocked in a goal from the backside.
Â
The Lancers were on the attack just a few minutes later, but lightning rolled into the area and caused the game to be postponed with 8:46 to play in the second quarter.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
Â
"We started off strong and had them on their heels a little bit," said Longwood head coach
Miranda Rigg about her team's execution in the first quarter. "Our press was working for us, and our defensive structure held strong and minimized their opportunities early on."
Â
"The goal was great and helped us create momentum early, which is what we've been looking to do," Rigg added. "I think if we had the opportunity to continue, we would've come out ready to battle again."
Â
UP NEXT:
Â
Longwood heads to Davidson College for a Sunday afternoon matinee. The match, which opens up a three-game road swing, begins at 2 p.m.
