FARMVILLE, Va. – Deja Vu moment in the conference weekly awards, as Backstrom and Pone are awarded, once again, the Big South Pitcher and Co-Freshman of the Week.
Super senior
Sydney Backstrom had a weekend she'll never forget. The fifth year, went 2-0, throwing a total 20 strikeouts, with a batting average against her of .098.
Backstrom's strikeouts this weekend put her name on the top of Longwood's career record for total strikeouts. Longwood's ace hit the mark with her first three pitches, served right down the middle, on Sunday.
Previously set by the very talented 2017 graduate Elizabeth McCarthy at 654; the record was cracked on April 17. New leader Backstrom severed Presbyterian two two-hitter games, with 13 of her 20 strikeouts coming in the game one win 1-0 for the Lancers.
For freshman
Jaden Pone, her weekend was just one hit away from being perfect as the freshman earns her second weekly award on the season.
Pone was 7-8 from the plate (.875 b/avg), with one RBI, and three runs. In her three starts, she collected a .875 slg%, the team's best from the week.
Pone has been the leadoff batter since early on in the season. She's grabbed 39-40 starts in her first year, all in the outfield and the first spot in the lineup.
Written in the stat sheet, almost every time Pone steps into the batter's box, the team can count on her to get on base. The freshman went 3-3 in both team wins in the series victory over Presbyterian.
Pone also went 5-5 in stolen bases, verse attempts. Her decorated stat sheet, caps off with the three times Pone crossed home plate - all of which came in the 12-1 victory over the Blue Hose.
As for Backstrom, the predicted Big South Pitcher of the Year, her season has gone as intended. She now sits with 190 total K's on the season, a single-season best for number 99, and has 661 over her Longwood career; and counting.
She now sits with a .168 b/avg against her on the year, another single-season personal best. Backstrom has put up seven games with double-digit strikeouts, and has matched her single-game best 13 K's three times so far on the year.
