Hiatt, Colone Homer, Chapin Strong in 4-2 Win over Youngstown State

Lafayette beats Lancers 16-6 in Saturday’s second game

FARMVILLE, Va. — Maggie Hiatt and Natalia Colone hit home runs and Maggie Chapin pitched her 10th complete game of the season, scattering eight hits with eight strikeouts, as the Longwood softball team gained a measure of revenge with a 4-2 win over Youngstown State Saturday.

The Penguins (11-10), who beat the Lancers twice in two previous games in the Longwood Spring Break Classic, were limited to just a seventh-inning two-run shot by Lydia Wilkerson.

Four Longwood (10-15) pitchers issued 14 walks to Lafayette in the second game of the day as the Leopards claimed a 16-6 decision in six innings.

Against Youngstown State, which Longwood also run-ruled in last week's home Bank of the James Invitational, 10-1 in five innings, Hiatt blasted her third homer of the season to left field to lead off the second inning, a solo shot, to give team the lead.

Brooke Bennett singled in Ava Abromavage with two out in the fifth to make it 2-0 and Natalia Colone sent her first collegiate home run to left field with Bailey Bucholz aboard and two gone on the sixth for a 4-0 lead.

Chapin improved to 5-6 on the year, fanning at least one batter in six of seven innings. She walked three and hit one, using 119 pitches.

Lafayette (5-10) put up six runs in the first inning of the nightcap, receiving a two-run homer from Katie Harrington as well as a four bases-loaded walks from KK Byas and Cierra Gawryluk.

The Lancers cut it to 8-4 in the third inning on an Avery Miller sacrifice fly to left and a Bennett RBI single, but Gawryluk forced in two more with walks in the fourth.

Lafayette added six runs in the top of the sixth to end the game early.

Mallory Sanders (1-2) started, lasting 1 1/3 innings, surrendering six runs on four hits and four walks.

The Lancers got eight hits in the game, including three for extra bases — doubles from Bennett, Hiatt and Miller.

Longwood closes the weekend playing Lafayette at 12:30 p.m., on Sunday.
