FARMVILLE, Va. — Four players collected multiple hits and freshman Ava Abromavage was 3-for-3 out of the leadoff spot as the Longwood softball team defeated Lafayette, 8-4, at Bank of the James Park on Sunday.
The Lancers banged out 13 hits in all, scoring in five different innings to improve to 11-15 overall.
Abromavage had a pair of doubles, two runs driven and two runs scored on the day, adding a walk and stolen base, to ignite the offense. Longwood slugged three doubles and freshman Lauren Faulkner hit her second home run of the season — a solo shot in he second inning to right-center field.
Right-hander Maggie Chapin struck out 12 in her 11th complete game of the season, moving to 6-6. She scattered seven hits, seven walks and four earned runs, using 148 pitches.
Maggie Hiatt, Faulkner and Bailey Bucholz each also tallied a pair of knocks in the win while Sophia Knock contributed a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-2. That capped a three-inning stretch in which Longwood plated five runs, including two in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
"Very pleased with our response from yesterday," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "We have things we still want to refine as we get ready for conference in two weeks. I can see the growth in so many areas. Excited to see what the rest of the year holds.
The Faulkner blast gave Longwood a 2-1 lead in the second after Hiatt singled down the right-field to score Abromavage with one out in the first.Â
Lafayette (5-13) got even in the top of the second after Dani Rosner worked the Leopards' seventh bases-loaded walk of the weekend.
Abromavage smacked run-scoring doubles later in the second following the homer and again in the fourth, scoring Bucholz both times, as the Longwood lead grew to 4-1.
Naleya Bridges got into the act in the fifth, doubling to the gap to chase Sarah Terrell home. Bucholz then came up with an RBI single to score Bridges.
Lafayette got one back in the top of the sixth and then Kylee Sweet hit a two-run homer to left in the seventh to pull to within four, before Chapin closed the door.
Marisaa Powell (1-2) started in the circle and took the loss for Lafayette in 4 1/3 innings. She gave up nine hits, six earned runs and four walks, giving way to Jordan Goedel.
Longwood is back in action Tuesday at Norfolk State for a single game at 2 p.m.Â
