NORFOLK, Va. — Seven different players secured hits and Maggie Hiatt and Sophia Knock hit home runs as the the Longwood softball team beat Norfolk State, 11-1, on Wednesday.
The Lancers (12-15) earned their first road victory of the season and improved to 27-0 all-time against the Spartans (8-9).
Longwood led, 6-0, after two and a half innings and added five runs in the seventh to complete the win. Cierra Gawryluk got the win in the circle out of the bullpen, going the final five innings. She allowed two hits, a walk and an earned run, striking out two to improve to 3-4 on the season.
"Pleased with the fight and adjustments throughout the game," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "It truly took the whole team today. I love when we play as a unit."
Hiatt's fourth home run in the last seven games — a three-run blast to left-center field with one out in the top of the first — gave Longwood an early lead.Â
Ava Abromavage, who was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored from the leadoff spot, added to the lead in the second. With Naleya Bridges on second and two out, Abromavage lined an 0-1 pitch down the left-field line to make it 4-0.
Hiatt walked to begin the third before Knock hammered a 3-1 offering to left field to for her second homer of the season, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Maggie Chapin took the ball to start and was sharp, not allowing a hit in her two innings. She struck out the side in the second, finishing with four Ks against just one walk.
Longwood sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits and one error for the final margin. Sophia Pisacano (two-run single) and Abromavage each came up with run-scoring base hits while Natalia Colone posted a sacrifice fly to highlight the frame.
Knock and Pisacano tallied two hits apiece, rounding out a trio of Lancers with multiple knocks.
Samantha Stevenson (1-2) absorbed the loss in the circle for the Spartans, pitching the first two innings. She surrendered six earned runs on six hits and three walks prior to giving way to Amaya McPherson and Jaiden Henderson.
Longwood is back on the road Friday and Saturday for its first-ever meeting with Wofford. The three-game set gets underway with a single game Friday at 5 p.m., at Hope Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
