Wofford Tops Lancers, 10-2, to Open Series

Bennett, Hiatt RBI doubles help Longwood carry lead into third inning

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Longwood softball team took an early lead, going up 2-0 in the third inning at Wofford on Friday, but the Terriers scored 10 times over the final three innings for a 10-2 win at Hope Field.

Longwood (12-16) had the lead just three pitches into the game as Wofford right-hander Abby Greenwood plunked leadoff hitter Ava Abromavage with an 0-1 pitch. Brooke Bennett then lined the first pitch she saw to the gap in left-center field, scoring Abromavage for the advantage.

The Lancers made it 2-0 in the top of the third as Bennett walked and pinch runner Jordyn Hern was sacrificed to second before Maggie Hiatt ripped a double of her own to left center to double the lead.

Wofford (17-4) loaded the bases twice in the bottom of the third, first with three consecutive walks from Maggie Chapin. Brianna Stanley then lifted a fly ball to right field to plate Sydney Baker to make it 2-1 before Chapin got Kalli Petty swinging for the second out of the inning.

A fourth walk of the frame, this one to Gracie Parker, loaded the bases again for Kaytlin Greenwood, who doubled down the right-field line to give her team a 3-2 lead. Desirae Devine followed, singling home two more, pushing the lead to 5-2 through three innings.

Wofford added four more in the bottom of the fourth, the big blow a three-run home run off the bat of Petty with two out in the inning over the left-center field fence that made it a 9-2 game. Two batters earlier, Rivers Sampson added an RBI single that scored Addison Lucier.

Wofford ended the game early on a walk in the bottom of the fifth. Chapin's 3-2 offering was wild, allowing Lauren Archambault to score from third.

Chapin (6-7) who came into the day tied for the NCAA lead in complete games, picked up her 12th of the season in the loss. She allowed five hits, 10 earned runs and 12 walks. Abby Greenwood improved to 7-1 with five innings of three-hit ball for Wofford. She allowed two earned runs, two walks while striking out five.

Bennett and Hiatt had doubles for the Lancers and Natalia Colone added a second-inning single up the middle.

The teams finish the series with a noon doubleheader Saturday on ESPN+.
