SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Wofford took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with the Longwood softball team on Saturday at Hope Field, winning 7-4 and 5-2.
In the first game, the Terriers used a four-run bottom of the fourth inning to open a 6-1 advantage before the Lancers rallied for two in the sixth and one in the seventh. In the second, Sophia Knock crushed her fourth home run of the season in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead before Wofford took a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the second and tacked on single tallies in the third and sixth innings, respectively, to complete the sweep.Â
"Preseason is about one thing preparing for Big South play," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "We have one week to put the finishing touches on who we need to be. It is truly go time."
Longwood (12-18) got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth of the first game, cutting Wofford's 2-0 lead in half. Knock started the inning with a walk, followed by a Lauren Faulkner single to center field. Bailey Bucholz then reached on a fielder's choice that pushed Knock to third before Sophia Pisacano laid down a bunt single to get the run in.
Wofford (18-4) sent 10 batters to plate in a four-run bottom of the inning, collecting five hits and three walks off of Longwood pitchers Cierra Gawryluk, Mallory Sanders and Morgan Strickland, to lead, 6-1. RBI singles in the frame came from Lucy Cameron (bunt) and Lauren Archambault (two-run base hit to left).
Knock doubled to left to lead off the sixth, moving to third on a pinch-hit single by Sarah Terrell. Bucholz then lifted a fly to center to chase in the run. Pisacano followed, getting hit by a Margaret Axelson pitch, putting runners on first and second.
McKenzie Powell then hit a bouncer up the middle that was mishandled at second base to score Terrell and make it 7-3.Â
Ava Abromavage ended the threat, hitting into a double play.
Brooke Bennett and Brooke Masingale hit consecutive doubles in the seventh to account for the final score.
Masingale went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI to lead the Lancers' nine-hit offense while Archambault was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Terriers.
Axelson improved to 5-2 in the circle, scattering three earned runs and three walks with six strikeouts over seven innings. Gawryluk went 3 1/3 innings for Longwood, giving five runs (all earned) and nine hits. She struck out one and walked one.
Abromavage took the first pitch of game two up the middle and into center field before she was erased on a Bennett fielder's choice. With Bennett on second and two out, Knock rocketed a 2-2 pitch from Natalya Salo over the fence in left center for a 2-0 lead.
The Terriers halved the deficit in bottom of the inning as Addison Lucier singled to right center, scoring Kaytlin Greenwood with no one out. The Terriers proceeded to load the bases, coaxing three consecutive walks from Strickland, but the right-hander worked out of trouble, inducing a pop up to end the inning and limit the damage.
Wofford, though, took the lead in the second when Lucier turned in a perfect squeeze bunt to score Desirae Devine and Briana Stanley came up with an RBI single through the left side to make it 3-2.
Wofford added single runs in the third and sixth.
Salo (5-1) went the distance for the Terriers, yielding four hits and five walks on the day. She fanned five. Strickland (2-4) recorded five outs, giving up three runs on four hits and five walks. Maggie Chapin went the rest of the way, striking out six and walking three. She gave up one earned run.
Abromavage, Bennett, Masingale and Knock had hits for the Lancers.
Longwood returns home to face nationally ranked Virginia Tech in a 4 p.m., doubleheader Wednesday at Bank of the James Park on ESPN+.
