Landis and Uhl Spark Longwood's Breakthrough Final Round at Kingsmill

Lancers Put Together Fourth-Lowest Single Round in Division I Era

9/13/2021 6:22:00 PM

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After day one at the W&M Fall Invitational this past Sunday, Longwood women's golf head coach Brittany Dabule turned her team's focus away from the tournament field and instead placed it on themselves.

"We can't compare ourselves to the rest of the field," she said. "We can only compare ourselves with how we have been over the past couple years as a team."

As it turned out, even Longwood's record books hold little comparison to what the Lancers did Monday.

Buoyed by a three-under 69 from sophomore Emma Landis, Longwood shot a 292 on the final day of William & Mary's home tournament for the program's lowest single-round score since March 24, 2012, and the fourth-lowest score of the Division I era. The performance jumped the Lancers four spots into eighth place at the three-day, 54-hole tournament, settling them into the middle of the 15-team field at the par-72, 6,219-yard Kingsmill Resort River Course.

"I'm very proud of how the team played throughout the tournament," said Dabule, who began her third season leading the Lancers at the tournament. "Each player contributed towards the team score. They grinded for each shot, stayed positive and never gave up.

"Our goal heading into today's final round was to finish the tournament strong, and we did exactly that. Emma Landis was fun to watch as she navigated her way to a career-low three-under 69. That wasn't the only highlight from today, though. As a team, we posted the lowest team score in nearly a decade, and it was such an incredible feeling. That is just the beginning of a new era for Longwood women's golf, and I'm excited for the ride."

The Lancers shaved 12 strokes off their second-round score Monday, finishing 307-304-292—903 (+39) to best seven other squads, including host William & Mary, Navy and Big South rival Radford. They trailed seventh-place Richmond by just five strokes and had the third-lowest team score in the tournament's final round.

Landis' 69 came on the hometown course for the Virginia Beach native and was also Longwood' lowest by an individual since Courtney Tolton shot a 69 at the CSU Fall Invitational on Sept. 13, 2016.

Along with Landis' breakthrough performance – which tied for the second lowest final round in the 79-player field – senior Bobbi Uhl bounced back to shoot 72 and surge 20 spots up the individual leaderboard to a top-50 finish. She was Longwood's fourth-place finisher behind Diana Domenech, who shot a steady 77-75-75—227 (+11) to place tied for 35th, and Annabelle Jennings, who closed out the tournament at 75-74-79—228 (+12). Grace Huffman also made a push into the top 50 as well, firing a 76 Monday to finish 76-79-76—231 (+15) en route to a 48th-place result.

With their first fall tournament in the books, the Lancers will now set their sights on the Edisto Island Invitational set for Sunday and Monday, Oct. 10-11, at The Plantation Course at Edisto.
