Stephenson's Consistency Lifts Longwood To Ninth

Lancer Senior Shoots Bogey-Free Golf In Final Round At Joe Feaganes Invitational

9/10/2019 9:23:00 PM

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Teagan Stephenson saved his best for last to close out the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in style Tuesday afternoon at Guyan Golf & Country Club. The senior's big day helped Longwood climb to ninth place to wrap up the tournament.

The senior was a model of consistency on the way to carding a 67, which tied for the best round of the day. Stephenson vaulted to a top-20 finish by playing bogey-free golf with 14 pars and four birdies. The 67 tied his career-best round.

"Teagan was rock solid," head coach Kevin Fillman said. "Players don't have many chances to go bogey-free, especially in competition. He really held us in when things weren't going very well."

The Lancers ended the tournament 282-287-285—854 (+2) behind Stephenson (70-75-67—211, -2) and Colin Caporal's (69-68-74—211, -2) top 20 finishes.

VCU won the invitational with a 273-272-276—821 (-31), while Dayton (-28, 824), Eastern Kentucky (-20, 832), Eastern Michigan (-20, 832) and Wright State (-14, 838) rounded out the top five.

"Besides Teagan, most of us experienced our share of struggles today," Fillman said. "Even though things didn't quite go as planned, our guys played so hard all day. I'm proud we had guys out there making birdies down the stretch, including a couple on the final hole of the tournament."

"Even when our skills let us down at times, I always ask them to play with more heart than everybody else. Our guys did that today."

Ryan Hammer followed an even Monday with 13 pars and a 1-over 72 in the final round to place T-38 in the tournament.

Brandon Weaver finished the event T-50 after carding a 1-over 72 in the final round, and Miles Parroco notched his best round with a 3-over 74 on the final day to finish T-78.

"We have a couple weeks to work on some things before going to NKU," Fillman said. "We'll get started on those things later this week and will be ready to go when it's time."

The Lancers head to the Northern Kentucky Classic from September 23-24 at the Lassing Point Golf Club in Union, Kentucky.
