BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Led by an eight-goal performance from Mackenzie Koeller, Campbell used an 11-0 run in the first half to break open the contest and down the Longwood women's lacrosse team 20-8 Wednesday in Big South action.
Koeller led an offensive outburst that saw the Camels score 12 first-half goals, including the final 11 of the half, while firing off 43 shots.
"We didn't match up well today with Campbell's athleticism," said sixth-year head coach
Elaine Jones. "We didn't have an answer for the draw and giving up those possessions certainly came back to haunt us because we gave Campbell too much time to execute their offense."
Longwood (7-9, 2-4 Big South) saw a career day from both
Jordan Howard and
Corri Calandra on their combined four draws and four ground balls, as well as multiple goals from
Molly Barkman and
Kaitlin Luccarelli and three assists by
Riley Dolan, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the Big South's fourth-best scoring offense.
Freshman midfielder
Hannah Tirrell also assisted on a career-best two Lancer goals as she and Dolan accounted for five of the six total helpers.
An All-Big South performer last season, Luccarelli scored her team-best 42nd goal Wednesday and raised her shot percentage to a blazing .609 mark.
The Lancers also saw goals from the quartet of
Lexi Davis,
Charleigh Kondas,
Dana Joss and Dolan while
Imani West collected her 10th double-digit save performance of the season.
Dolan extended her streak of at least three assists to eight straight games as she's dished out 43 of her NCAA-leading 59 helpers in that stretch.
"Overall a tough loss, but we will have to learn from it as we have a quick turnaround before the next game on Saturday," Jones said.
Longwood will close the regular season Saturday when it honors its seven seniors Dolan, Kondas,
Brianna Kelly, West,
Madison Stair,
Andie deCelis and
Hollyn Royster. First draw against nationally-ranked High Point is set for 1 p.m. on the Big South Network.
