FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore midfielder
Dana Joss enjoyed a career-best offensive performance Saturday as her five goals paced the Longwood women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory over Presbyterian Saturday for their second win over the past three contests.
Joss, a native of Louisville, Ky., got things going early scoring three first-half goals – two coming in the opening 10 minutes as part of a 3-0 Lancer run to open the contest and headline a huge day for a quartet of sophomores.
"Before the game, coach told us that we needed to spread ourselves out and look for the cuts into the middle," Joss said. "
Riley Dolan and
Lexi Davis did a really good job at seeing me and getting me the ball quickly, and their good feeds made it a lot easier to see the openings to score."
Since being inserted into the Lancer lineup before conference play last season, Joss has scored 38 of her 41 career goals with 13 multi-goal performances, eight coming this season.
"We also did a really good job at making space for one another and working as a unit, which was shown by how many people scored today," Joss said.
All-Big South performer and sophomore
Kaitlin Luccarelli added four goals as classmate
Lexi Davis had another prolific passing day with four assists, tying senior and NCAA-leader
Riley Dolan for a game-high. Davis also added two goals for a team-high six points alongside Joss' six-point afternoon.
Meanwhile, preseason All-Big South and 2017 All-Big South first team member
Molly Barkman added four points on two goals and two assists as well as a team-best five draws.
As a whole, the quartet of sophomores accounted for 13 of the 18 Lancer goals and seven of the 11 assists.
"Last year our team had a lot of injuries and many of the freshmen, myself included, had the opportunity to step up and fill those roles," Joss said. "Coach Jones, Coach Parcell and the upperclassmen have given us sophomores a ton of feedback that has helped us improve and be confident in our ability to play and make a difference on the field."
Not to be outdone, the group of seniors in Dolan,
Hollyn Royster,
Charleigh Kondas,
Andie deCelis and
Imani West combined for two goals, four assists, 16 ground balls, five draws and six caused turnovers.
Dolan, who entered the weekend fresh off setting the program record for single-season assists, added four more bringing her total to 56 with three regular season contests remaining. A native of Northfield, N.J., Dolan tightened her grip on the lead for most assists in the nation as she's dished out 40 across the past seven games.
Dolan now sits fourth on the all-time single-season points list with 81 behind 56 assists and 25 goals.
West, who collected her seventh win of the season in the net, collected three saves and three ground balls while causing a Presbyterian turnover in just over 54 minutes of action.
Presbyterian (2-13, 0-5 Big South) made things interesting to open the second half cutting it to a 9-6 Lancer margin thanks to a multi-goal performance from Sarah Marshall and two assists from Lauren Schaaf, but it wasn't enough to hang around a potent Lancer attack that scored nine of the game's final 10 goals to close out the Blue Hose.
Longwood heads to Campbell for their final Big South road contest of the season before welcoming in reigning champion and nationally-ranked High Point for Senior Day in one week.
First draw between the Lancers and Camels is set to go up at 4 p.m.
