LYNCHBURG, Va. – Reigning Big South Freshman of the Year
Amadeo Blasco, current freshman
Raisei Sakai and senior
Jorge Godoy carried the flag for Longwood men's tennis in the opening round of the Liberty Fall Invitational Friday evening as the trio all picked up singles wins.
The duo of Blasco and Sakai combined for five victories on the day as all three took their singles matches after Blasco and Sakai paired up for a doubles win over VCU's Inaki Rivero Crespo/Karl Katlaps by a 6-3 score.
On the same court he sealed Longwood's first Big South victory in March, Blasco dominated Charlotte's Ben Wayand in a 6-1, 6-3 straight set. After making his mark on the Big South last season, Blasco is off to another hot start with a 3-1 record thanks to a 2-1 showing at the UNCW Invitational just two weeks ago and another strong singles performance Friday.
Talented freshman Sakai followed suit with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback effort over Campbell's Ondrej Labok in a potential Big South matchup later this season.
Picking up where he left off last time out, senior
Jorge Godoy took down Big South foe Lorenz Schwab from Campbell in a gritty 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 full set match for the Lancers' third singles victory.
The senior also picked up a doubles win Friday as he teamed up with freshman
Daniel Hernandez to take down Presbyterian's duo of Will Baird/Alberto Conde 7-6 for a perfect 2-0 on the day for Godoy.
Second round action from Liberty University picks up at 9 a.m with doubles play as Blasco, Sakai and Godoy look to stay perfect and push further into the winner's bracket.
