Tournament Bracket
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Just as the case was Friday for men's tennis, the veterans led the way Saturday and Sunday as Longwood took home 20 wins combined in the 2017 UNCW Fall Invitational over the weekend.
"We totaled 20 wins in a tournament with good teams so it is a great start to the season," said Reigning Big South Coach of the Year, and two-time Longwood Coach of the Year
Pierre Tafelski. 'As a young team, we showed great character and competed well."
Plenty of caliber teams competed in the fall invitational including host UNCW, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Elon, Gardner-Webb and N.C. Central.
The tag team of
Arthur Bardellotto and
Julian Farthing ran the table in Flight B Doubles as they took the draw over the Appalachian State duo of Milo Bargeron and Alex Pavkovich 7-6 (7-4) to complete three-straight upsets of seeded tandems.
Bardellotto and Farthing have gotten used to the doubles success as the two partnered for an impressive 12-6 record with 11 of those victories coming at court No. 2.
Senior
Jorge Godoy continued his winning ways Saturday as he edged UNCW's Marshall Warren with a three-set 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2 to advance to Sunday's championship against the Seahawks' Michael Morphy. Godoy eventually fell in the title match of his draw 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), as he was one of six Lancers to compete in the final match of their respective draws.
"It is very encouraging to compete well that early in the year so we need to get back on the practice court, get stronger in all areas and we will be on the path to a successful year," Tafelski said. "Upperclassmen led the way as Julian and Arthur won their draw and Jorge made it to the final."
In singles play, four Lancers made it to the final match of their back draws including
Amadeo Blasco, who took down UNCW's Michael Copeland in a dominant 6-1, 6-1 fashion. Bardellotto also won his final match of the morning as he defeated N.C. Central's Gabriel Cucalon by a 6-2, 6-2 margin to round out wins in Flight A singles.
In Flight B singles, freshman
Raisei Sakai picked up a win in the third-place pool over Johan Fors and Farthing fought back from an early deficit to down Millen Hurrion 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The duo of Blasco/Sakai won the back draw of Flight A doubles after a bye in the semifinals and 6-3 victory over Paul Hogan/Johan Fors.
Rounding out the Lancers' wins inside singles play was newcomer
Rosen Naydenov, who picked up three wins Saturday and Sunday after falling in his first match Friday afternoon. Naydenov knocked out NCCU's PJ Torres, Appalachian State's Blake Carter and Gardner-Webb's Adam Schmidt to take the back draw in Flight C.
Longwood gets a break before their next fall tournament at Liberty beginning Sept. 21 and running through Sept. 23.
