History Continues For Lancers, Defeating Spartans 6-1

Longwood Sets Division I Wins Record In Road Tilt

NORFOLK, Va. – The Longwood men's tennis team has continued to set new milestones throughout the 2017 season, and Sunday was no different.

Longwood (13-5) held a 3-0 lead over Commonwealth foe Norfolk State (1-7) Sunday when freshman Noah Petralia delivered the match-clinching blow with his 7-5, 6-2 triumph on court six, giving the Lancers their Division I-record 13th win of the season. Petralia's match-clinching win was his ninth of the season and first at court six in the 6-1 triumph.

"Norfolk State is a solid team and the guys played with great discipline," said head coach Pierre Tafelski, who has led the Lancers to new heights in just his second season at the helm.

Sunday's win at Norfolk State set a new program record for wins in a season during the Division I-era and ties the all-time record of 13 wins with one match left in the regular season. The Lancers also clinched their fourth three-match win streak of the season, having defeated Hampton and Chowan in the past week.

After sweeping the doubles point 6-2, 6-4, 6-3, Longwood got a much tougher battle from the Spartans in singles play, taking five of six courts.

"We accepted long battles one point after another, which makes a huge difference at this level," Tafelski said.

Freshman ace Amadeo Blasco picked up his 15th singles win of the spring in a quick 6-0, 6-1 decision, needing just one more singles win to tie for the most to start a career. Blasco's win on court one was also his second-straight after dropping back-to-back matches against Presbyterian and Hampton for the first time of his career.

Sophomore sensation Julian Fathing pushed his win streak to three-straight in a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at court four, and giving Longwood a 3-0 lead before Petralia's clinching-point on six.

Senior captain Florian Uffer furthered his win streak to a team-leading four-straight, battling on court two for a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Sunday's win was Uffer's 11th of the spring tying his career-high of 11 during the 2014-15 season.

Arthur Bardellotto, who picked up a win at court three Saturday, collected his fifth win at three in a 7-5, 7-5 gut check over counterpart Dan Dumitrascu to push the Lancer led to give the Lancers their sixth tally of the match. Bardellotto's win was his 12th of the 2017 season and his third in the past three matches.

The Spartans' lone point came in a win at court five as Agustin Carrizo took a 7-6 (x-x) first set tiebreak and carried that momentum for a 6-1 match-clinching second set.

Longwood returns to action Wednesday for a regular season finale at Big South rival Radford, a match that was postponed from earlier this season due to weather. Match time against the Highlanders is set for 3 p.m.
