Uffer, Lancers Deliver 6-1 In Senior Sendoff

Strong Singles Play Lifts Lancers to 12th Win

FARMVILLE, Va. – Senior and team captain Florian Uffer collected his 10th victory of the season, leading the Longwood men's tennis team to a 6-1 win over a ranked Division II Chowan squad in his final home match.

Entering the day with 37 singles wins and 32 doubles victories, Uffer took a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 decision over counterpart Farid Hajizada, the No. 8 singles player in the Atlantic Division of the ITA's rankings. The win also secured double digit victories in singles play for Uffer in all three seasons he has donned the Longwood blue and white.

12295The Lancers' historic season also kept trucking as they have now tied the 2010-11 and 2009-10 teams for the most wins in a single season, 12, during the Division I-era.

"This was a great match for our Senior Day," said second-year head coach Pierre Tafelski, who has the Lancers one win away from a new Division I wins record. "We came out strong in singles and kept it up all the way to the end."

Uffer wasn't the lone Lancer to take down a ranked opponent as the dynamic freshman duo of Amadeo Blasco and Arthur Bardellotto took down two other top-20 ranked individuals.

After falling behind in his first set 6-4, Blasco stormed back with a 6-3 second set win and dominant 1-0 (10-4) third set tiebreak for the Lancers' sixth and final tally. Blasco's triumph came over counterpart Adi Kaliakperov, who came into the match ranked sixth in the Atlantic Division.

Bardellotto cruised in a 6-2, 6-2 victory at court three, his fourth win at that slot in the rotation and 11th overall. Bardellotto's win knocked off 20th ranked Mateusz Izycki for a seventh win in his past 10 decisions.

Sophomore sensation Julian Farthing contributed to the winning action taking a 6-4, 6-1 victory at court four to seal the Lancer victory on Senior Day, and extend the lead to 4-0. Farthing's conquest at court four tabbed him as the fourth different Lancer to collect 10-plus singles wins this spring, joining Blasco, Bardellotto and Uffer.

Jorge Gomis picked up his fourth win of the season at court five and seventh overall with a 6-0, 6-4 decision, and brought his record back to the .500 mark.

In doubles play, the tandem of Uffer/Blasco collected win No. 13 with a 6-3 win against the 10th ranked combination of Hajizada/Kaliakperov. Entering Saturday's match, Blasco and Uffer were in the top four of the Big South Conference in doubles winning percentage at 12-4 overall.

Saturday's doubles win was also the seventh-consecutive win for the pair of aces, who are 8-2 in their last 10 bouts.

Longwood closes out their nonconference slate at Commonwealth foe Norfolk State Sunday afternoon before taking on Big South rival Radford Wednesday in a match that was postponed due to weather. Match time against the Spartans is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
