Blue Hose Showcase First Place Toughness 6-1

Lancers Fall To Big South-Leading Presbyterian Sunday

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Big South-leading Blue Hose used straight-set victories on five singles courts to pull away for a 6-1 win over the Longwood men's tennis team Sunday afternoon from the Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts.

The lone remaining unbeaten team in the Big South coming into Sunday's action, Presbyterian (13-9, 5-0) backed their 2017 resumé with the dominant 6-1 win to complete a weekend with wins over Longwood (10-5, 3-3) and Liberty.

"Presbyterian is a team that competes very hard and today they were mentally tougher than we were," said second-year head coach Pierre Tafelski.

Presbyterian displayed that mental toughness Sunday, taking two of the three doubles courts by 6-1 scores and five singles courts in straight-sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 5. Brandon Mills, who was named Big South Player of the Week in March, led the charge in doubles with partner and singles ace Alexander Lykou at court two while Diego Manzanas/Jamie Lopez followed suit at court three.

Senior ace Florian Uffer got back in the win column with a 6-3, 7-6 win over his counterpart, bringing his singles win tally to eight.

Uffer, alongside Amadeo Blasco, extended his doubles win streak to five-straight with a 7-6 win at court one to avoid the doubles sweep.

After their third three-game winning streak of the season, the Lancers have dropped three of their past four matches.

"Our guys need a lot of growing up and maturing to do," Tafelski said. "We have a few matches to regroup and get ready for conference play."

Longwood gets three chances in nonconference bouts to right the ship before wrapping up the regular season at Big South rival Radford in a match that had been postponed from late March.

The nonconference stretch begins Tuesday when Hampton comes to Farmville, Va. for a mid-afternoon affair. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. from the Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts.
