FARMVILLE, Va. – Fueled by straight-set wins in both singles and doubles, Longwood rolled to a 7-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney for their 10
th victory, their first 10-win season since the 2010-11 campaign.
Longwood showcased their D-I prowess early in doubles play with 8-4, 8-3, 8-0 wins to bounce back after a 4-3 hard-fought loss at George Mason, and set the tone for singles play.
Senior captain and ace
Florian Uffer played closer for a second time this season, clinching the win with his 6-0, 6-2 victory at court one to give Longwood a 4-0 lead, and extending his win streak to four-straight. Uffer's sweep came on the heels of straight-set wins by dynamic freshmen
Amadeo Blasco and
Arthur Bardellotto at courts two and three.
Bardellotto, who slid up to court three, extended his singles win streak to five-straight with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over counterpart Trent Singleton. Bardellotto's streak is the longest of his career, just behind Blasco's eight-match streak earlier in the spring.Â
A product of Toulouse, France, Bardellotto is 9-2 overall and 3-1 at court three.
Blasco, who was named Big South Freshman of the Week earlier in  March, picked up his fourth consecutive singles win 6-0, 6-3 at court two. The Valencia, Spain, native is 7-0 at court two and 12-1 overall to lead the team in singles wins.
"This was a good match going into an important conference play weekend," said second-year head coach
Pierre Tafelski, who has the Lancers on the cusp of setting a new program record for wins in a single season.
Fellow freshman
Noah Petralia pushed his singles record above the .500 mark with a 6-3, 6-0 win, his second victory at court four. Petralia has also won back-to-back home matches having sealed Longwood's 4-3 thriller over Big South rival UNC Asheville.
Junior college transfer
Jorge Gomis extended Longwood's lead to 6-0 with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win at five, and senior
Rosen Ilchev took care of his counterpart at court six 6-1, 6-0 in his first match of the spring.
In doubles play, the tandems of Blasco/Uffer and Bardellotto/
Julian Farthing picked up their ninth wins of the season at courts one and three while Gomis/Petralia picked up win number five.
The Lancers were wearing yellow shoe laces as part of "Go 4 Goal," which helps fundraise and support the fight against pediatric cancer. The men's tennis team is just the latest on campus to wear the yellow laces, as both baseball and softball are lacing up for it this spring.
Longwood looks to continue their impressive streak and historic season rolling with two huge conference matchups over the weekend. The Lancers travel to Gardner-Webb Saturday at 2:30 p.m. before hosting Presbyterian, the current No. 1 team in the Big South rankings, Sunday at 2 p.m. in a Lancer Strong match.
