Experience Keys Camels Past Lancers

Campbell Takes 4-1 Decision, Spoil Lancer Home Opener

FARMVILLE, Va. – Using sweeps at three of the four completed singles matches, Campbell took advantage of a flat Lancer squad for a 4-1 Big South win, spoiling Longwood's home opener Friday at the H-SC Tennis Courts.

"We came out flat and let them get away with the score early on," said head Coach Pierre Tafelski. "We need to play more complete matches. Campbell has a lot of experience and it made a big difference today."

In a match that was shortened due to Mother Nature and lack of lighting, Campbell put their experience to work with three sweeps in the four completed matches. The Lancers were playing the back-end of a double header with the women's team, which had already been pushed back due to rain showers earlier in the day.

The Camels took an early 1-0 lead with wins at doubles courts No. 1 and No. 3 behind the tandems of Dustin Werner/Lorenz Schwab and Gerard Sola/Jonathan O'Neal.

In singles play, Amadeo Blasco made quick work of Nicolas Rakitin at the No. 1 slot, pushing him to an impressive 8-0 record on the season. The Big South Freshman of the Week has played only two three-set matches to this point in his career, and is 2-0 in conference play after a three-set win against Liberty and his sixth sweep of 2017 on Friday.

Matches at courts four and five were unable to finish due to lighting. At the time the match was called, Julian Farthing and Gerard were heading to a decisive third set, and Noah Petralia and Lorenz Schwab were nearly halfway through a third set.

Longwood will have another tough task Saturday afternoon as they head down to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Big South preseason favorite Winthrop. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
