ELON, N.C. – Perennial CAA power Elon ended the Longwood men's tennis season-opening streak with a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
"We fought hard but didn't capitalize when we needed," said second-year head coach
Pierre Tafelski, who has the Lancers off to their best start in the Division I-era dating back to the 2007-2008 season. "Elon has been a top CAA conference member for years and showcased more experience at important moments."
Elon, a team that has made postseason appearances on a consistent basis, flexed their muscle and showcased experience over a young Lancer squad for the home victory.
Freshman
Amadeo Hervas kept up his hot start for the blue and white, sweeping Elon's Petar Tomic 7-5, 6-2, and a 4-0 beginning to his Lancer career.
"It's a learning experience for our young team, hats off to Amadeo [Hervas] who played a complete match," Tafelski said.
Longwood heads to the Mountaineer State to take on West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday in a neutral court bout. Match time is set to begin at noon from White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
