LYNCHBURG, Va. – After a 3-0 start to the ITA Atlantic Regionals and becoming the first Lancer to ever reach the quarterfinal round, sophomore ace
Amadeo Blasco fell to his Virginia counterpart Aswin Lizen – the No. 8 seed in the Liberty-hosted tournament – by a 6-3, 6-4 margin, ending his run through singles play.
During his run, Blasco became the first player in program history to defeat a ranked opponent as he cruised past Penn State's Constant De La Basseteire 6-1, 6-0 in an almost perfect sweep. Basseteire entered Sunday's match against Blasco ranked as the No. 118 player in the country in the preseason ITA National Rankings.
The loss on Monday was only his second of the fall in singles play as Blasco now sports a 9-2 fall record with a singles championship under his belt as he leads a potent and young Lancer squad into their final tournament of the fall season at Navy this upcoming weekend.
In his short time as a Lancer, three semesters to be exact, Blasco has collected 29 singles wins, 25 doubles wins, a fall tournament singles championship, the program's first Big South Player of the Week award and first Big South Freshman or Player of the Year accolade.
Round of 8 Singles:
Lizen (UVA) def. Blasco (LWU) 6-3, 6-4
