FARMVILLE, Va. -- After gaining momentum with a sweep in doubles play, Longwood men's tennis went on to win all six singles matches to earn the all-around sweep in a 7-0 victory over crosstown foe Hampden-Sydney Monday afternoon at Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts.
Longwood (6-9) sophomore
Alfonso Castellano and freshman
Julian Farthing opened the match with a convincing doubles win to guide the quick start by the Lancers en route to their second straight victory. Castellano and Farthing topped Hampden-Sydney's Patrick Bryant and David Anderson 6-0, 6-0 to pick up their third straight win as a duo at No. 1.
"Today was another confidence boost for us," said head coach
Pierre Tafelski. "It's always nice to get on a two-match winning streak before returning to conference play."
In addition to leading the doubles sweep, Castellano kicked off Longwood's singles sweep with a win in the first singles finish of the day. A product of Almeria, Spain, Castellano beat Hampden-Sydney junior Trent Singleton in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at the No.1 to push his win streak at the top spot to three matches.
At the No. 3, Farthing sealed the match victory for the Lancers with his win over the Hampden-Sydney junior Anderson. Farthing also earned a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory against Anderson to give him his second straight singles win while it marked Longwood's fourth point.
Prior to Farthing's match sweep, Longwood junior
Florian Uffer also picked up his second straight singles win. Uffer topped Hampden-Sydney freshman Harrison Stone 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 position to give the Lancers their third point of the match.
While Castellano, Farthing and Uffer extended their match winning streaks, the Lancers saw senior
Bharani Sankar and sophomore
Jay Bradt tally their first wins of the spring season. Sankar defeated Tiger Andrew Loving 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 while Bradt, who made his first appearance of the season, completed the Lancer sweep with a win over Bryant at the No. 6.
Longwood claimed the doubles-point win upon a victory by the pairing of Uffer and sophomore
Lachlan Manser in the No. 2 singles match. Uffer and Manser beat the Tiger duo of Singleston and Stone to earn their first doubles win since facing Coastal Carolina.
In No. 3 doubles, Sankar paired with
Rosen Ilchev to give Longwood their third doubles win and complete the sweep. Sankar and Ilchev picked up a 6-1 victory against Hampden-Sydney pairing of Loving and Nathan Horvit.
After helping the Lancers complete the doubles sweep, Manser took home his second singles victory of the spring with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over the Tiger junior Horvit. The win also ended Manser's two-match skid entering the contest.
Longwood will seek to win a third straight when it returns home to continue Big South play against Gardner-Webb Wednesday, March 30. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
