Manser, Lancers End Drought With Win at Hampton

Lachlan Manser Clinches Longwood Victory with Three-Set Singles Win

HAMPTON, Va. - Following an early deficit, Longwood men's tennis made a comeback in singles play capped off by the match-clinching win by sophomore Lachlan Manser as the Lancers earned a 4-3 victory over Hampton Tuesday at Neilson-Screen Stadium.

In a tight match that went to three sets, Manser topped Hampton's Joshua McQueen 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the No. 6 to end Longwood's (4-7, 0-4 BSC) three-match winless streak entering the day. Manser's win over McQueen helped the Lancers overcome a doubles-point loss and marked the sophomore's first singles win of the season.

"After a slow start in doubles, the guys came out strong in singles to get quick wins at Nos. 1-3," said Longwood head coach Pierre Tafelski. "Lachlan has worked extremely hard since last fall, and his dedication paid off today. I am happy for him."

Despite trailing 1-0 after Hampton took the doubles point, the Lancers received a boost from back-to-back wins from sophomore Alfonso Castellano and Florian Uffer in the first two singles finishes.

At the No.1 spot, Castellano defeated Hampton's Matt Foster-Estwick 6-2, 6-2 to bring Longwood even with Hampton at 1-1. The win ended Castellano's four-match drought in singles play, while it was his fifth of the season at No. 1.

In No. 2 singles play, Uffer also earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hampton's Fedor Shirin to put the Lancers in control with a 2-1 lead. It was the junior's second singles win in three matches and first at the No. 2 in six matches.

After Hampton tied the score 2-2, Julian Farthing's win at the No. 3 position gave Longwood a 3-2 lead to set up Manser's match-clincher in the next singles finish. The freshman standout Farthing beat Hampton's Peter Odegbami 6-3, 6-4 to pick up his second career win in No. 3 singles and first since being moved back into the No. 3 spot in the team's last match.

Hampton fought its way back into the match with a No. 4 singles win by freshman Charles Hudson that gave the Pirates their second point. Hudson took a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Longwood senior Bharani Sankar before the Lancers reeled off two straight singles wins to claim the match.

Longwood will continue its string of road matches when it travels to take on Commonwealth-foe Richmond on Thursday, March 24. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
